LIVE WORKS Performance Act Award

LIVE WORKS is a platform dedicated to live contemporary practices currently co-curated by Barbara Boninsegna and Simone Frangi at Centrale Fies Art Work Space. It contributes to deepening and broadening the idea of performance, following the current evolution of performance and its styles.This platform aims to measure the concreteness of performance in the real world, investigating the double of nature of LIVE - in person and alive - highlighting those moments in which performance integrates with the dynamics of life.

Starting from the notion of performance in the visual art practice, the prize is unique in its particular attention to hybrid research, underlining the openness and fluidity of performance, its social and political implications and its level of public understandability. 

LIVE WORKS sees performance as a work space, and as an instrument and cultural exercise, opened to a wide range of emerging performative actions, including: performances, sound and new media arts, text-based performances, lecture performances, multimedia storytelling, choreographic practices, relational and workshop-based projects, and other projects questioning the idea of performativity beyond the body.Born as a competition, today Live Works is an expanded idea of award: neither a professional jury nor a winner, rather a long-term activity. The selected projects have a residency at Centrale Fies in July, before Drodesera performing arts festival, curatorial support, all technical facilities and a fee for their production. LIVE WORKS also provides a theoretical program: the Free School of Performance, that includes studio visits, critical sessions, reading groups, discussions on specific themes towards the redefinition of the concept of performance and informal encounters supporting the production of each project.

The artists present their performances in a 3 days live program in front of the audience and a board of international professionals from outstanding contexts of production of performances (festivals, biennials, international production and residency centre). The board gets in contact with the works of the emerging practitioners and it is actively involved in public and private meetings with them.

After summer, each artist has the possibility to come back for a second residency to the unique environment of Centrale Fies, between the river, the mountains of Trentino and the Marocche, one of the oldest and suggestive landslides in the world.

Within Live Works lies the Agitu Ideo Gudeta Fellowship (curated by Simone Frangi and Barbara Boninsegna with Mackda Ghebremariam Tesfau’ and Justin Randolph Thompson), conceived as a form of affirmative action. From 2025 the fellowship is in collaboration with Palazzo Grassi and Fondazione Re Rebaudengo, acknowledging that the lack of diversity in the art world is linked to real, material and symbolic barriers, often in the context of racialization. The scholarship offers a pathway of residency, research, and promotion within the LIVE WORKS – Free School of Performance platform, dedicated to contemporary live practices that contribute to deepening and expanding the notion of performance, and which have served as a scouting tool for the research center for 13 years.

LIVE WORKS è una piattaforma dedicata alle pratiche contemporanee live curata da Barbara Boninsegna e Simone Frangi a Centrale Fies Art Work Space. La piattaforma nasce per contribuire all'approfondimento e all'ampliamento del concetto di performance, seguendo lo spostamento del performativo e delle sue cifre. La piattaforma vuole misurare la concretezza della performance art nel reale indagando l’idea di live nella sua duplice natura – dal vivo e il vivo – dando spazio ai momenti in cui la performance si integra alle dinamiche di vita. LIVE WORKS intende la performance come spazio di lavoro e come strumento ed esercizio culturale e riserva un’attenzione particolare a ricerche artistiche “dal vivo” prescindendo proprio dalla loro presunta provenienza disciplinare. La piattaforma sostiene e produce ricerche ibride con l’intento di sottolineare la natura di “apertura” e fluidità del performativo, la sua implicazione sociale e politica e la sua intelligibilità pubblica.

Nato come competizione, oggi Live Works è un'idea allargata del premio: né una giuria, né un vincitore, piuttosto un'attività a lungo termine. I progetti selezionati hanno diritto a una residenza presso Centrale Fies con supporto curatoriale, tecnico e un budget per la loro produzione. LIVE WORKS fornisce anche un programma teorico: la Free School of Performance, che include visite in studio, critical session, gruppi di lettura, discussioni su temi specifici verso la ridefinizione del concetto di performance e incontri informali a sostegno della produzione di ciascun progetto.
Gli artisti presentano le loro esibizioni in un programma live davanti al pubblico e ad un board di professionisti internazionali tra cui curatori e art director di festival, biennali, centri di produzione e residenza. Il board entra in contatto con le opere dei professionisti emergenti ed è attivamente coinvolto in studio visit e confronti diretti con gli artisti.

Dopo l'estate, ogni artista ha la possibilità di tornare per una seconda residenza nell'ambiente unico di Centrale Fies, tra il fiume, le montagne del Trentino e le Marocche, una delle più antiche e suggestive frane del mondo.

All’interno di Live Works si posiziona la fellowship Agitu Ideo Gudeta (a cura di Simone Frangi e Barbara Boninsegna con Mackda Ghebremariam Tesfau’ e Justin Randolph Thompson), pensata come una forma di affirmative action, dal 2025 in collaborazione con Palazzo Grassi e Fondazione Re Rebaudengo riconoscendo che l’assenza di diversità nel panorama artistico è legata a barriere materiali e simboliche concrete spesso nell’ambito della razzializzazione. La borsa di studio offre un percorso di residenza, ricerca e promozione all’interno della piattaforma LIVE WORKS – Free School of Performance, dedicata alle pratiche contemporanee live che contribuiscono all’approfondimento e all’ampliamento della nozione di performance, e che sono strumento di scouting del centro di ricerca da 13 anni.
